What to wear to your family photoshoot

As a photographer, I understand that one of the most important aspects of a successful family photoshoot is the clothing choice. The right outfit can make all the difference in how your family looks in the final images, so it’s essential to put some thought into what everyone will wear. Here are some tips to help you choose the perfect outfits for your family photoshoot.

Coordinate colors, but don’t match exactly

It’s a good idea to choose a color palette for your family’s outfits, so everyone looks coordinated in the final images. However, you don’t want everyone to match exactly, as that can look a bit too uniform. Instead, choose a few colors that complement each other and mix and match those colors across your family’s outfits. This will create a cohesive look without being too matchy-matchy.

Consider the location and season

Your choice of clothing should also depend on the location and season of your photoshoot. If you’re having your photos taken on the beach in the summertime, you’ll want to choose lightweight, breathable fabrics that won’t make you too hot. If you’re having your photos taken in the fall or winter, you may want to layer up with scarves, jackets, and hats. If your unsure on a location near Central New York, check out this article.

Keep it timeless

While it’s tempting to dress your family in the latest trendy outfits, it’s important to remember that these images will be on display for years to come. To ensure your photos are timeless, choose classic, timeless pieces that won’t look dated in a few years. Think about what you’d wear to a nice family dinner or event, rather than what’s currently in fashion.

Add some texture and accessories

To add some depth and interest to your family’s outfits, consider adding some texture and accessories. For example, a chunky knit sweater or a scarf can add texture to a simple outfit, while statement jewelry or a fun hat can add a pop of personality.

Be comfortable

Most importantly, make sure everyone is comfortable in their chosen outfits. If you’re uncomfortable, it will show in the final images, and you’ll be less likely to look and feel your best. Make sure everyone’s outfits fit well, are weather-appropriate, and don’t require constant readjustment.
