Memorial Art Gallery (The MAG) — Rochester, NY

About this venue

Getting married at an actual art museum is exactly as cool as it sounds. The Memorial Art Gallery, known locally as the MAG, is one of Rochester’s most iconic architectural landmarks and part of the University of Rochester. The Fountain Court, often called the most beautiful room in Rochester, was built in 1926 and features dramatic vaulted architecture, Renaissance and Baroque masterworks lining the walls, and the only full-size Italian Baroque organ in North America as the ceremony backdrop. Receptions move into the M&T Bank Ballroom with dark wood, high ceilings, and a sprawling dance floor. Capacity runs up to 225 guests. Catering is handled in-house by Max Catering, a day-of coordinator is included, and both a bridal dressing area and groom’s area are on site.

Why we love it

Where do we even start. As photographers, walking into the MAG for a wedding feels like being handed a gift. Every room, every hallway, every courtyard is a photo location. The architectural details, the artwork on the walls, the sculpted outdoor gardens — the variety of backdrops here is genuinely unmatched by almost any other venue on this list. We could shoot for hours and never repeat a background.

And the cocktail hour gallery access is one of the coolest guest experiences we have ever seen at a wedding. Your guests get a private hour to explore a world-class art museum while you sneak off for portraits. They are genuinely entertained, the vibe during cocktail hour is relaxed and energetic at the same time, and it is something people bring up for years after the wedding.

The Fountain Court ceremony with that Baroque organ as your backdrop is something else entirely. There is no decoration in the world that competes with a 300-year-old Italian organ surrounded by Renaissance paintings. It just works.
